HOW TO: PLANT A TREE

To have the most success with planting your newly purchased tree we recommend these steps.

Dig the hole 2 to 3 times the width of the root ball or container.

The hole depth should be 3” shallower than the root ball. This allows the crown of the tree to be above the ground.  The tree root ball should be 3” higher than the soil line.

Cut any twine or rope holding root ball in place but do not remove the burlap.

Backfill the hole with a mixture of 50% Back to Nature Cotton Burr Compost and 50% existing soil.

Slowly water the tree from the top of the root ball until the soil is saturated.  Watering with a root stimulator will help to stimulate root growth early on.

Mulching is not required but recommended.  A layer of mulch placed to a depth of 2” inches over the area of the hole will discourage grass growth. Allow a 2” gap from the tree trunk to where the mulched area begins.

Water trees every day for the first 4 or 5 days and then gradually reduce the frequency.  Slowly apply water to the root ball and surrounding areas.

NOTE:

Most new trees in Oklahoma need staking for up to two (2) years. The support straps need to be above the bottom branching, and the stakes need to be in solid soil (not newly dug soil). Periodically check the staking to ensure a firm hold and that the ropes are not too tight for the tree trunk’s girth.
